Chapter 12

The Proposition

The things I enjoyed most about being a newlywed were the adventures and spontaneity. Tamara dispelled every myth I had about church girls being rigid and conservative when it came to sex. My wife worked as a part-time reporter for the local television station, but once she entered our home, she traded in the career dresses and suits for outfits that fully displayed her assets. Often I’d come home from a long day of interviews and find my wife wearing skin-tight, short, or see-through clothing, and sometimes practically nothing and high heels, waiting to serve me dinner. She wasn’t ashamed of her body and wasn’t bashful about letting me know she wanted my hands on her body. It didn’t take long for us to create a special memory in every room.

A peaceful atmosphere was important to Tamara. She filled our home with soft music and fragranced it with scented candles and fresh flowers. We didn’t argue and worked as a team in every area, even prayed together. Sundays after church service, we alternated Sunday dinners between the Jacksons and Mama’s house. Sometimes we all ate together, like one big happy family. I cherished those moments most of all.

The transfer of my inheritance was competed three days after our sixth-month anniversary. It all seemed surreal—me married to Tamara and a millionaire. I offered Tamara the option of being a stay-at-home trophy wife, but as I expected, my angel wasn’t having it. “I didn’t spend six years earning two degrees to sit at home and look pretty,” she said, when I made the suggestion.

Financial security didn’t make us wasteful. We decided to finish out the lease before purchasing a home in a gated-community. I eventually secured a job as a Financial Analyst. I wanted to gain experience before Tamara and I started our non-profit organization to assist leading the financially insecure into financial freedom. I did splurge on my nieces by matching Mama’s contribution to their college funds. Carlton and I had never spent much time together, but since my marriage and the birth of his son, we conversed regularly. True to his character, Carlton didn’t ask for a dime when I shared the news of my newfound wealth. I respected him for that, and paid off his student loans. I felt I owed him that much after he saved my wedding day. After an uncharacteristic hug, he warned me of sharing the news of my fortune with our brother. I still hadn’t seen him since my wedding, but I’d spoken to Randall sporadically on the phone about nothing in particular. By coincidence, Randall started calling a few days after my inheritance released. As much as I wanted to, I didn’t have the courage to confront him, even over the phone, about how his recreational habit interrupted my wedding day. I ignored my conscience and concentrated on making a home with my wife.

Since she loved them so much, I routinely brought Tamara a caramel Frappuccino home. Without fail, she’d shower my freckled-face with kisses, like I’d given her a diamond ring.
